How Cathy transformed a tool shed into her
very own, enchanting “Pink Fairy Cottage”.
Where others might have just seen a small backyard tool shed, Cathy Scalise saw the foundation for an enchanting, “Fairy Tale Cottage,” garden retreat at her home in Wilmington, MA.
The
pink gingerbread house features a white picket fence outside, adding
lovely accents to the surrounding garden of "Fairy Roses." Entirely
painted and decorated in pink and pastels, it is just as charming inside
as it is on the outside. Cathy has furnished the cottage with vintage
pieces and accents, including a small tea table, wicker chairs and
buckets of fresh flowers. A rose-adorned rug adorns the floor and is
accentuated by an antique bench painted pink with several chenille
quilts and pillows for comfort.
Cathy’s garden includes a blend of annuals and perennials arranged in a warm and soothing pattern that leads back to the calming sounds of a river that runs along the back edge of the property.
Some of her favorite varieties are original to centuries-old English country gardens. They include Sweet Pea, Foxglove, Morning Glory, Delphinium, Sweet William, Coneflower, Pansies, Cosmos and a variety of herbs. In late summer
and fall, romantic spring and summer colors warm
into vibrant tones with Mums, Black-eyed Susan, Marigolds and Zinnia in
